Things to Do in Hanover NH This August: A Local Field Guide

The last two weeks of August in Hanover have a distinct feel. Undergrads have not returned. Faculty are back but not busy. The sidewalks on South Main are wide open at 6:30 p.m., and every restaurant that spent June and July catering to reunion crowds and graduation guests is suddenly focused on locals again. If you have lived here more than a year, you know the window. This post is about what to actually do with it in 2026, because the downtown you will use in September is not the same one you used last August.

The Two Weeks That Anchor The Month

Main Street Hanover front-loads its signature programming into a single stretch. The 2nd Saturday August Summer Celebration lands on August 8, 2026, in Downtown Hanover, and Restaurant Week runs August 8 through 22, 2026. Two weeks. Same kickoff day. If you plan around anything this month, plan around that overlap.

Restaurant Week is the more interesting of the two for residents, because it is the only time of year when the town's higher-check kitchens set prix-fixe menus that let you sample without committing. It is also the best excuse to try the two rooms that opened over the winter, which most people who live here have still not been inside.

What Is Actually New On The Block

If your mental map of downtown dining stopped updating around 2022, two additions from late 2024 are worth catching up on before term starts.

A building at 15 Lebanon St. is now home to Little Havana, a Cuban restaurant, while a previous tenant of the space opened a tapas spot a block away in the Six South Street Hotel. The tapas spot is Casa Brava. Chef Martin Murphy, the former owner of Ariana's Restaurant, partnered with James Van Kirk, former owner of Candella Tapas Lounge, to open Casa Brava in December 2024. The restaurant can seat up to 57 people including the bar, and there is a patio with an additional 25 seats. The patio is the part locals miss when they hear "hotel restaurant" and mentally file it under travelers only.

Little Havana is the family operation. Mariella Cubillet, her daughter Maylena Chaviano, son Ernesto Medina and family friend Yuniesky Miyar opened the restaurant featuring Cubillet's Cuban home cooking on Dec. 3, 2024. Ropa vieja and ham croquetas are the anchors. It is the only Cuban kitchen in walking distance of the Green.

Kieran Campion, who runs Sawtooth Kitchen on Allen Street, framed the shift for the Valley News in December 2024: "We've seen a nice resurgence since we came out of COVID of some new places opening up." Restaurant Week in August is the cleanest way to see what that resurgence actually looks like on a plate.

The Weeknight Backbone

Once the 2nd Saturday crowds clear, the weeknights carry the month. This is the part of Hanover that does not advertise itself to visitors, and it is genuinely worth building a routine around before September pulls everyone's evenings in different directions.

Night Where What
Thursday The Fourth Place, 3 Lebanon St, second floor Tabletop games from the library free to play at premium tables; folks usually arrive around 6:00 pm to choose games, first games around 6:15 pm.
Friday Still North Books & Bar, 3 Allen St Word Game Night, 6:00 to 9:00 PM.
Saturday The Fourth Place Couch Multiplayer free console play starting at 6:00 pm; no membership, pass, or purchase required.
Sunday The Fourth Place Family afternoon, 12:00 to 5:00 pm; family-friendly games free to play, and a kid's day pass includes free access for an adult.
Monday Sawtooth Kitchen, Allen St Trivia Night with host Casey Murray and Questionable Content, 6:30 to 8:30 PM; six rounds, 60 questions, prizes and swag to the winners.

Notice what this map does. It puts a low-cost anchor on five nights of the week within a two-block radius. If you have out-of-town family visiting the third week of August, you can build an itinerary out of exactly that grid without ever crossing Wheelock. If it is just you and a book, Still North's Friday game night is the closest thing Hanover has to a bar-adjacent living room.

One Outdoor Night To Watch The Calendar For

If June already passed you by, the town's summer dance programming is a data point worth filing for next year. The summer salsa dance returned for 2026 in the parking lot of the RWB Community Center, a free public event Friday, June 5, 2026 from 6 to 8 PM, with Alexander Faria of Boston and his band providing live music. The reason to remember it now: the Parks and Rec office tends to schedule these anchor events on early-summer Fridays, and the August lull is when people forget to look at the town calendar for 2027.

The Thesis, Stated Plainly

August in Hanover is not a dead month. It is a hinge. The Main Street Hanover programming compresses everything social into a two-week block, and the two-week block sits directly on top of the quietest weeknights of the year. The reason to care about that overlap is practical. It is the only time all year when you can walk into Casa Brava on a Wednesday without a reservation, do a Restaurant Week menu at a longtime downtown room like Murphy's on the Green or Three Tomatoes on a Thursday, and still get a Monday trivia table at Sawtooth without arriving forty minutes early. Try that same sequence in October.

The residents who get the most out of Hanover are the ones who treat August as a scouting month. You are not fighting for a table. You are figuring out which of the new rooms deserves to be in your regular rotation once campus is full again, and which of the weeknight anchors survives your actual September calendar. Restaurant Week gives you the excuse. The pre-term quiet gives you the room.

A Short Checklist Before The Term Starts

  • Book one Restaurant Week seat at a room you have not tried, not one you already know. If Casa Brava and Little Havana are both new to you, they are the highest-information picks.
  • Walk the 2nd Saturday on August 8 even if you skip the evening. It is the fastest way to see which downtown storefronts changed hands over the summer.
  • Pick one weeknight anchor and use it twice before Labor Day. Twice is what turns a place you have heard of into a place where the staff knows your order.
  • Note which patios still have evening light at 7:30. That number shrinks fast after August 20, and it decides where you will eat outside in September.

Working With A Local

Knowing the rhythm of a downtown is part of what makes a neighborhood feel like yours. It is also the kind of context that does not show up on a listing page, and it is the reason people who have lived in Hanover for a decade still ask a neighbor before they pick a Tuesday night reservation. If you are thinking about the housing side of that same question, whether that means understanding what your current home is worth in this market or figuring out which pocket of Hanover fits the way you actually spend a Wednesday evening, Carter Auch is happy to talk it through.
